Athens sits at the junction of U.S. 29, U.S. 78, and the Athens Perimeter (Georgia 10 Loop), putting Atlanta roughly 70 miles to the west and Greenville, South Carolina, to the northeast. State Route 316 provides the most direct freeway link toward Atlanta. Athens-Ben Epps Airport offers general aviation and regional flights, while Athens Transit provides local bus service across the consolidated city-county, supplemented by the university's campus transit system. There is no direct passenger rail into Athens, so most regional commuting is by car.
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, operated by the university, spans more than 300 acres with themed gardens and miles of trails. Sandy Creek Park, on Lake Chapman northeast of downtown, offers boating, fishing, dog parks, and hiking. The Firefly Trail and North Oconee River Greenway form a growing rail-trail and riverside network for walking and cycling, while Bear Hollow Zoo and Memorial Park serve families close to town. The surrounding Piedmont countryside adds lakes, rivers, and state parks within an easy drive.
