Fayetteville is a city in, and the county seat of, Fayette County, Georgia, located about 22 miles south of downtown Atlanta in the southern portion of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Incorporated in the early nineteenth century, it grew up around its courthouse — the oldest surviving courthouse in Georgia — which anchored the city's early commercial life and still defines its historic downtown.
