Gateway to Callaway Gardens
Welcome to Pine Mountain, a small Harris County town in the western Georgia foothills, best known as the gateway to Callaway Gardens and Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House.
Pine Mountain is a small town in Harris County, Georgia, in the gently rolling foothills where the Piedmont begins to rise toward the Blue Ridge, near the Alabama line and about an hour south of Atlanta. A small portion of the town spills into Meriwether County. Its roughly 1,200 residents live in a community whose identity has been shaped by two things above all: the natural setting of Pine Mountain itself and the resort legacy that put the town on the map. The town began in 1882, when the railroad pushed south from Columbus, and for most of its first eight decades it was known as Chipley. In 1958, the community renamed itself Pine Mountain, borrowing the name of the forested ridge that rises nearby — and, tellingly, aligning itself with Callaway Gardens, the sprawling horticultural and resort destination that the Callaway family had developed on the town's doorstep. Callaway Gardens, a roughly 2,500-acre resort with gardens, golf, lakes, and trails, remains Pine Mountain's most famous neighbor and a major local employer. Just up the road, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House — the simple cottage he built on Pine Mountain in 1932 while seeking relief from polio at nearby Warm Springs — draws visitors to the area's deep presidential history. Together these attractions give a small rural town an outsized tourism profile. Beyond the attractions, Pine Mountain is a quiet, low-density community where most residents own their homes and daily life runs to the rhythms of a small Georgia town. The Harris County School District serves local students, and Hamilton, the county seat, plus the larger hubs of Columbus and LaGrange are within a short drive. Who Pine Mountain suits: it appeals to those who want a rural, wooded setting with resort amenities, gardens, golf, and hiking at hand, along with easy access to Columbus and the western Georgia region.
